Travel insurance can protect you from unexpected costs you might have to pay if your holiday doesn't go to plan. Because medical care abroad can be expensive, it's important to find a policy that provides cover if you get injured or fall ill.

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to buying travel insurance. Make sure you check the following before you buy:

• Cancellation cover

John Lewis Travel Insurance provides up to £8,000 cover per person for costs resulting from having to cancel your holiday.

• Single items

Both your travel and home insurance policies will have single item limits. These vary among different providers. 
John Lewis Home Insurance and John Lewis Travel Insurance provide cover to make sure your valuables are protected.

• Travelling while pregnant

If you're pregnant you should always speak to your insurance company before you travel. Contact us on 0800 953 2552 to speak with one of our representatives.

• Maximum age limits

Most travel insurance providers only cover travellers up to a certain age, so it’s best to check this before you start to get a quote.

John Lewis Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance is only available to people under 75 years old. However, there is no upper age limit on our Single Trip Travel Insurance.

• Policy excess

When you make a travel insurance claim, you usually have to pay an excess. When you take out a policy, if you choose to increase your excess, the price of your insurance may go down.

You can often also choose to pay a bit more for Excess Waiver so you don’t have to pay an excess if you do need to make a claim.   

Under our Plus and Premier Travel Insurance policies, the maximum excess you’ll have to pay when claiming is £100 or £120 respectively.

• Unexpected events

Occasionally your holiday can be affected by the unthinkable, such as a volcanic eruption or your hotel going out of business. It’s worth checking that your insurer will cover you against unexpected events like these.

John Lewis Travel Insurance can provide cover for alternative accommodation or travel arrangements if your holiday is disrupted and cover if your holiday supplier goes bust.

All travel insurance policies differ in the type of cover they provide. For example, if you’re planning a skiing or snowboarding holiday, check with your insurer to make sure you’re covered. Some insurers will charge an additional amount or not cover you if you take part in adventurous activities.

John Lewis Travel Insurance offers wide-ranging optional cover for a variety of activities including golf, diving and winter sports. John Lewis Travel Insurance can also cover weddings abroad.

For Plus or Premier Cover, John Lewis Travel Insurance can cover a wide variety of pre-existing medical conditions as long as you make us aware of them when you take out your policy. We may decline any claim or part of any claim directly or indirectly relating to a medical condition which was not disclosed and accepted by us at the time of taking out the policy or during the duration of the policy.

If you choose Essential cover, your policy will not provide cover for any pre-existing medical conditions.

For a close relative, business associate, or travel companion who is not insured but whose health may affect the trip, you might not be covered for any claim that’s related to their condition.

Remember to let your bank and credit card company know when you plan to go abroad. That way they can monitor any unusual activity on your accounts, especially if they detect spend within the UK.
