Comparing car insurance providers

These days it seems as if everyone is offering Car Insurance, from supermarkets to the Post Office and the AA. But how do you find the cheapest, most suitable Car Insurance policy for you and your vehicle?

Many people continue to use their existing Car Insurance Company because it’s easier to just renew it, rather than shopping around trying to find the cheapest cover. By doing this you’re not only wasting money, but you may not actually be using the Car Insurance provider that is best for you.

Rather than take the easy option of forgetting to compare the market, follow our Top Tips to see how you could not only save money, but actually make sure your Car Insurance covers everything it needs to and doesn’t have any hidden extras.

1. Take the simples way

There are hundreds of TV adverts for hundreds of online Car Insurance comparison websites, so going online can be a good place to start. Results can be confusing, but if you enter in the correct details and pick and choose the cover you do and don’t want, you may find that you could save over £100.

 2.  Go direct

Once you’ve browsed an online comparison website, it’s worth phoning the insurance provider who’s worked out the cheapest and best for you. This means you can talk to a person who can answer your questions before you commit to buying. Some insurers aren’t on price comparison websites so you can always ring them to ask what they can offer you.

 3.  Stay faithful

If you find your Car Insurance cheaper online, ask your current provider if they will match it. If you’ve been with them for several years you can often negotiate as they won’t want to lose your business. Make sure you can back up the price you’re asking them to match and be honest about what it does and doesn’t cover.

 4.  Don’t get confused

Remember that the cheapest Car Insurance isn’t always the most comprehensive and you may get caught out if you make a claim for something you thought was covered. So before you buy, check that the insurer you’ve chosen provides the right level of cover that you need for your car.

 5.  Consider the benefits

Certain insurers will give you a gift when you join them or offer a rewards scheme. This shouldn’t necessarily sway you too much, but it’s worth considering if it’s a close call. Just ask yourself whether you really need a toy meerkat, or if you’d rather have loyalty points for your local supermarket.
