Home Insurance FAQs

What's covered by 'accidental damage'to contents?

Some home insurance contents policies will pay for accidental damage to TVs, CD or DVD players and other home entertainment equipment.

However some companies may require you to pay an additional amount to cover things like DIY mishaps and spilling red wine on the sofa.

What's covered by 'accidental damage' to buildings?

With John Lewis Home Insurance, Standard Accidental Damage Cover for buildings provides accidental damage cover for:

  • cables
  • underground services
  • and accidental breakage of:
  • fixed ceramic hobs
  • glass in windows
  • bathroom suites
  • drains and pipes.

Full Accidental Damage Cover for Buildings includes everything listed above, as well as damage caused by accidents like putting your foot through the ceiling while you’re in the loft or drilling through a pipe.

Accidental damage means sudden, unexpected and visible damage which has not been caused on purpose.

Your options

  • Premier Cover: Full Accidental Damage is automatically included.
  • Plus Cover: Standard Accidental Damage is automatically included and you can choose to upgrade to Full Accidental Damage.
  • Essential Cover: You can add Full Accidental Damage.

What’s the maximum number of bedrooms you can cover?

John Lewis Home Insurance can cover properties with up to six bedrooms. If you have more than this, you may be more suited to our Specialist Home Insurance. Call us on 0800 916 6880 to find out more and get a quote

Are my fences and garden walls covered for damage?

Yes, unless they're damaged by storms, flooding, ground heave, landslide or natural wear and tear.

How can I tell if my home is suffering from subsidence?

Subsidence is often confused with 'historical movement', so it's important to understand which applies to your property.

Historical movement means the property has moved in the past, but is no longer moving

Subsidence is the downward movement of the site on which your buildings stand by a cause other than the weight of the buildings themselves.

The signs of subsidence include windows and doors that begin to stick because the frames have moved and cracking in the walls. A Local Authority search will show records of building work carried out at the property - including underpinning, which is commonly used to stop or prevent subsidence.

What do you mean by a bathroom?

A bathroom is a room with a bath and/or shower, including en-suites. You do not need to include WC's or cloakrooms which just have a toilet and wash basin.

John Lewis Home Insurance

Excellent cover
A recent claim was handled with minimum fuss, very swiftly, with a fully digital process removing the need for cumbersome and slow paperwork.

Better than existing insurer
Had a very high renewal quote. Surfed around a bit. JL a bit more expensive than some others, but unlimited contents cover and other policy terms were better.

JL's plumber arrived very quickly, was very good
at what he did, tidied up and departed. Fuss free.

Comprehensive Insurance at a good price
Easy to sort out with many sectiions having UNLIMITED cover
-Free £50 voucher as well.
This makes high quality insurance with a net low cost.

A bad fall damaged my glasses
A sympathetic response to my claim for damaged glasses resulted in a no-quibble settlement

Really good cover package

I bought JL home insurance because it offered a really comprehensive package for the best comparative price I could find. i.e. the Premier cover option included some really useful per item cover for high value items like Cameras, Tech and Bikes, which other companies put quite low limits on, and charge extra premiums for. I particularly liked the unlimited contents and buildings cover which takes away the hassle of trying to calculate what level of cover you need. Great package and 20% off! Well done JL, this product ticks all the boxes!!

Great product, great service
Initial contact online then surprised to get a phone call to follow up and the service was excellent and the product exactly what I was after.

Quick, effortless insurance help

First year of John Lewis insurance. A leak developed in a radiator and remembering
the call out cover I asked for help. JL's plumber arrived very quickly, was very good
at what he did, tidied up and departed. Fuss free.

Good recommendation

The driving force behind my choice of 'John Lewis Insurance' was the Which? rating and favourable comments. Research on-line seems to verify everything I read.
Very helpful customer service rep with great communicationUnfortunately the only real test of an insurance policy is when you make a claim, so, I hope I never test it to the full.

A very Prompt and Speedy Claim process
I bought my Home and Contents insurance on line following an accidental click until then I did not know this service was available. It was very competitive and reasonable. I always shop in John Lewis and Waitrose so I was confident to buy my policy from John Lewis.

Good price
I purchased this a month ago and with it came the promise of a £25. voucher I now find I will not actually get this until about november ho hum such is life.

Positive experience!
Very helpful customer service rep with great communication

The plumber that was sent was very good.

John Lewis Home Insurance

5 Year Guarantee
The extended guarantee was a great incentive to buy, glad it was.

John Lewis Brand
Very Happy with JL Home Insurance except when dealing with the Home Emergency provider. They appear to treat your call as an attempt to defraud them, although the plumber that was sent was very good.
