Comparing home insurance

If you’re looking for home insurance it can be a difficult process as absolutely everyone seems to be offering it. Do you go with your supermarket, bank or estate agent? How do you know what’s best for your home?

If your home insurance is up for renewal, it can be tempting to stick with your current provider, rather than seeing if an alternative provider can offer you a policy that is more suitable for your home.

Don’t take the easy option and forget to compare the market, see how you could not only save money on your Home Insurance, but actually make sure your policy is suitable for you without any hidden extras.

1.  Keep it simple

There are plenty of TV adverts for hundreds of online home insurance comparison websites, so looking on the Internet is a good starting point. Insurance comparison sites can be confusing, but if you enter in your details and pick the level of cover you want, you may find that you save a significant amount of money.

2.  Go direct

Once you’ve browsed a comparison website, you might want to contact the insurance provider directly. By speaking to a member of staff, you can ask any questions you have before buying your chosen home insurance policy. Some insurers aren’t actually on price comparison websites so you can always ring those insurers to see what they can offer you. However, it's worth bearing in mind that online discounts may not apply to policies taken out over the phone.

3.  Don’t be confused

Remember that the cheapest home insurance isn’t always the most comprehensive, so check the cover is suitable - you don’t want to be caught out if you make a claim for something that isn’t actually covered. So before you commit yourself, check that your chosen insurer provides the right level of cover that you need for your home.

4.  Compare the benefits

Many insurers run promotions and offer a rewards scheme for new customers. This shouldn’t necessarily influence your decision, but it’s worth considering if you’re torn between several home insurance policies.
