If you’ve ever been unlucky enough to be involved in an accident, then you’ll know how stressful it can be. Which is why, if you need to claim on your John Lewis Car Insurance, we try to make it as simple as possible.
This short guide to making a claim will tell you everything you need to know about how to get back on the road.
Step 1. Contact us
After an accident or theft, the first thing you should do is call us on 0845 610 0360.
Or, for a windscreen claim, call us on 0845 610 0361 - we’re open 24 hours a day. (numbers on screen)
The claims handler will take your details and check your policy.
Step 2. Details of your claim
The claims handler will then ask for the details of your claim. The more details you give during the first call, then the quicker the whole claims process will be.
This is what you’ll need:
- the registration numbers of any other vehicles involved in the accident
- details of any third parties involved, including name, address and phone number
- details of witnesses
- and if possible, photographs of the accident and damage to any of the vehicles involved.
And this is really important - always remember, if you have an accident, you should never admit fault until you’ve spoken to your insurer.
Step 3. Putting things right
If your car can be repaired, you can choose to use one of our approved repairers or, if you’d prefer, you can use your own. Remember that if you decide to use a repairer of your choice then we can’t guarantee that you’ll get a courtesy car for the duration of the repairs.
If your car, when assessed, is beyond economical repair, the insurance company will make you an offer based on its current market value.
If you decide to use one of our approved repairers, the garage will contact you to book your car in. They’ll also offer a courtesy car for the duration of the repairs.
If your car is safe to drive and you have Comprehensive Cover, your courtesy car will be delivered when the garage collects yours.
Your own repairer
If you decide to use your own repairer, the claims handler may ask you to get an estimate from at least two garages. Send the quotes to the insurance company and they’ll choose which you should use and then authorise the repair work.
Step 4. Settling your claim
If your vehicle is beyond economical repair - a write-off - the insurer will make an offer of a settlement.
This will be based on the current value of your car and if any deductions need to be made – if you still have outstanding finance agreements,
If you’ve used one of our approved repairers, the claims handler will ask you to pay any excess to the garage when you collect your car.
The garage will then send the insurance company an invoice for the work. It’s worth noting that all our repairs are guaranteed for three years.
Your own repairer
If you’ve used your own repairer, the claims handler will ask you to pay any excess to the garage. The garage will then invoice the insurance company for the work.
