What animals do you insure?

John Lewis Pet Insurance provides cover for cats and dogs.

Do you have an age limit?

You can purchase Pet Insurance for your cat or dog as soon as they are over 8 weeks old and there’s no upper age limit. The only benefit that stops is death from illness cover. When your pet is over 9 years old, we won't give you back the purchase price if they die or have to be put to sleep through illness or natural causes. All other benefits continue.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

Your pet won’t be covered for any medical condition (illness or injury) or symptoms they had before the policy start date or any that occur during the first 14 days of your insurance cover.

Are the costs of neutering/spaying my pet covered?

Unfortunately not. Any preventative and elective treatments or routine examinations and treatment are excluded.

Is dental work covered (ie teeth cleaning, extraction)?

Your pet will be covered for dental treatment as a result of an accident but any regular dentistry is excluded.

Are hereditary and/or congenital conditions covered?

Yes, your policy will cover hereditary and congenital conditions provided the condition hadn't been discovered and your pet hadn't any symptoms before the start date or within the first 14 days of your Pet Insurance policy.

What is the policy excess?

We calculate your excess payments according to the breed and age of your pet. You can find the specific excess payments you would have to pay on the Summary page of your online quote application, or by calling us on 0800 916 6830.

How can I pay for my policy?

We offer our customers a choice of easy payment methods. You can choose to pay your premium by monthly Direct Debit (interest free) or if you prefer, you can pay a lump sum by credit or debit card. We don't charge you for paying your Pet Insurance premium monthly. Online payments are made via a secure server, which uses advanced encryption technology to ensure your details are safe during transmission.

Is there any advantage to paying my premiums monthly by Direct Debit?

Yes, since it breaks your premium down into very affordable monthly payments and you can relax in the knowledge that at renewal your cover will continue unless you tell us otherwise. We don't charge any interest for paying your premiums monthly.

How do I know if my cover has been accepted?

Once you've entered your payment details, the "payment confirmation" page will be displayed. This page confirms your cover and will display your policy number and cover start date. Your policy documents will be posted to you by first class post.

How do I cancel my policy?

You have 14 days to cancel from the date you receive your documents to receive a full refund, provided no claim has been made for the death of your pet. If you cancel your policy after 14 days you’ll receive a proportional refund, providing no claims have been made. If you wish to cancel your policy please call 0845 610 0302.

Can you cover my pet abroad? If so, how long for?

Yes, providing you're travelling to a member country of the PETS Travel Scheme and comply with the requirements of this scheme while you’re abroad. Further information is available on the Pet Travel Scheme website.

Can I rely on this cover year after year?

Yes. As long as you keep renewing your Pet Insurance policy with us, we'll keep providing cover. This means that if your pet develops a lifelong illness, you can claim for that condition no matter how long it lasts, up to a set amount each year.

Do I have to pay the vet and you reimburse me?

To make it easier for you we usually pay the vet directly if they are set up for this. If the vet is unable to offer this facility or you've already paid the vet, we'll send you a cheque. In the event of an emergency call out, the vet may request payment to be made immediately.

What’s the claims number?

Our claims number is 0845 610 0303 and the opening hours are:

Monday to Friday: 8am - 6pm
Saturday: 9am - 2pm

What do I do if my dog/cat is missing or has been involved in an accident?

Contact our claims department on 0845 610 0303 and they’ll take the details from you and issue a claim form. If it’s a dog which is missing, you’ll need to report this to the police and our claims department will require evidence of this.
