Excess Protection - £30.99 per year

If you need to make a claim for damage to your car, you’ll usually have to pay the total excess on your policy to the repairer. You can protect against this expense with Excess Protection which will reimburse up to £500 of your excess payment (excludes windscreen excess).

Protected No Claims Discount

Claiming for an accident that was your fault (excluding a windscreen claim) usually means you lose some or all of your No Claims Discount. However there is a way to protect your discount.

Protected No Claims Discount allows you to make up to two claims in three consecutive years without losing any of your No Claims Discount. This optional extra also allows you to continue to earn your discount in the years you don't have to make a claim.

We can provide Protected No Claims Discount if you’ve accumulated four or more years of claim-free driving. If you wish to protect less than four years of No Claims Discount we may still be able to help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Customer Service - thank you! Due to a change in personal circumstances, I had been dreading re-newing my car insurance. I needn't have worried... I was treated with courtesy and respect and at times was overwhelmed by the kindness I received - and yes, I'm still talking about car insurance! And, best of all, have come to a very agreeable financial arrangement whilst being treated like a human being. I would have no hesitation recommending this service - for the understanding and professionalism I received. Thank you.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Misunderstanding? My previous car insurance company jacked up the renewal price by 38% because I had made a claim last November. I filled in the John Lewis questionaire online and included the fact that I had made a claim. I also ticked the box to say that my no-claims discount was unaffected because I had NCD prorection. John Lewis replied with a vey reasonable quote which I duly accepted and paid for. A few days later I had an email requesting me to review my policy. I found that the price had increased and that someone had unticked the NCD Protection box which I had ticked. I rang up to discuss and was told that (a) I had not informed JL that I had made a claim (or possibly not ticked a box in a sub-menu) and (b) the underwriter would not give me NCD Protection. A new quote was offered with a different underwriter which of course increased the premium. At this point I went back to my old company and miraculously the lady reviewed my situation and reduced my quote considerably. I accepted this quote and cancelled the JL policy and have been told I will get a full refund.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Car Insurance I renewed my car insurance shortly after the death of my husband. On renewal I specially told the person to whom I was speaking that my husband had died and I was now the sole driver, and I accepted the quote given to me. I was promised that my husbands details would be taken off the policy but when the new one arrived, his details were still there. I immediately telephoned and was advised that I would have to pay another £46 for being a single driver. The logic of this escaped me, and I refused to pay the extra as I had advised of my circumstances at the time of renewal. The extra charge was waived. I am left with the feeling that on renewal next year I will again be penalised.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time :- Decided to shop around for my renewal :- Decided to use John Lewis :- On hold for at least 15 minutes each time I phoned. :- Details incorrect on final schedule :- Corrected details made it more expensive than my previous insurer :- Cancelled this policy :- Went back to original insurer for renewal (took 15 minutes, none of them on hold) :- Was given a 200 quid discount by previous insurer :- Took a whole day :- I can't fault the Staff - they were brilliant, call centre management and underwriters to blame

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Improved Although premium has gone up due to two claims in the last year, I'm pleased the excess is less, due to different underwriters. However, I found it rather upsetting to receive two letters saying you could no longer cover me, presumably because the policy was in the name of "The Executors" of my husband's will. You should have said that as his widow, I could apply for a new quote, instead of implying I was no longer insurable!
