Technology cover

If you’re going on holiday, especially if you have small children who need entertaining, the amount of stuff you take with you
can be ridiculous.

Apart from clothes and toiletries, the most expensive items we tend to take with us are our gadgets. These are tempting for thieves and often small and easy to lose.

If any of your personal belongings go missing or are stolen, standard Baggage Cover may not cover all your possessions.

John Brady, Head of Commercial at John Lewis Insurance, answers your questions about our Optional Technology Cover and how it can protect your possessions.

Q & A with John Brady

Q. What’s your background and what experience do you have in providing advice about Travel Insurance?

A. I've worked in financial services for 20 years, including banking, credit cards and insurance. The last five have been spent at the John Lewis Partnership, where I’ve helped to launch and develop John Lewis Insurance, including our personal insurance cover for cars, weddings, pets, homes, events and of course, travel. I love travelling and know how devastating it can be to have your holiday affected by lost or stolen possessions.

Q. Don’t I already have Personal Belongings Cover?

A. If you have our Essential Cover, Personal Belongings Cover is an optional extra to your standard level of cover.

If you have Plus or Premier Cover then Personal Belongings Cover is included as standard.

Q. Doesn’t this include my laptop and iPad?

A. Unfortunately not. Personal Belongings Cover doesn’t include damage to, or loss of valuable and fragile items. To make sure any gadgets are covered, you’ll need to take out our optional Technology Cover.

Q. What is Technology Cover?

A. If you carry several gadgets, this cover allows you to increase your single article limit to £1,500 to protect them all. It provides financial protection for valuable items such as computers and audiovisual equipment.

Q. Are there conditions for purchasing this cover?

A. Yes. You must be over 18 and have selected our Plus or Premier Cover. If you need to make a claim, you must have the original purchase receipts.

Q. Have you got any other helpful tips for keeping your belongings safe on holiday?

A. The most important thing to whilst on holiday is to not make yourself an
easy target:

  • Don’t flaunt your valuables - keep them hidden in your bag or pocket.
  • Know where you’re going so you don’t stand out as a tourist.
  • Keep items you don’t need in your hotel safe deposit box.
  • Always keep receipts for expensive items and take photos.
  • Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before you travel to find out about local crime hotspots.
  • You must report all lost and stolen items to local police within 24 hours and get a police report from them.
